Distinctive response to the human search for meaning

Although a seemingly 'brute' society, the Celts responded to the human search for meaning through a complex system of belief. Every religion is a response to the human search for meaning. Celtic religion is in no way different. The Celts had a great appreciation for nature and they also had a desire for universal balance. Within their life equilibrium was an important focus. The religion of the Ancient Celts was a practiced based on reaching a universal balance. The otherworld (place of the dead and spirits) and the heavens were kept in balance. They believed that there was a supernatural force in every aspect of the natural world developed a fear and deep respect to sustain life on Earth with balance. The Celts had to be the enforcers in achieving the universal balance.
It is also important to note that in a time where science did not exist the Celts relied on their belief in magic and superstition to provide answers to the fundamental questions which face us as humans. They had a life where pleasing their gods was an important way to reach meaning in their life.
Although, balance and pleasing gods was only 2 aspects of this intricate religion. Finally, the Celts had a strong believe in the afterlife. This was a belief so strong that when saw the otherworld (place after death) just as real as the physical world. They had to live in a way so when they died evil spirits would not hinder their journey to the otherworld.
In conclusion, Celtic religion was clearly a means of finding meaning in life. Their meaning was achieved in 3 ways;
1) Universal Balance
2) Pleasing the Gods
3) Reaching the otherworld in the afterlife.
It is these 3 base beliefs which guided the Celts in their decisions, action and lives.
